I have been a full time real estate agent since 1981...and yes if you count the years...it is a long time. I started my career in real estate for one reason only, I was a single mom with two children and hated I had no control if I needed to be home with them sick or attend all their activities. So, one day I took the leap of faith, quit my job and went off to real estate classes.
I can say, I was very fortunate, fell in love with the career and loved being my own boss and having the flexibility to come and go as I needed. I had to step up put my "big girl panties" on and have the courage to give it all I had and to not allow myself to fail. Now, some 40 plus years later, I am doing what I do because I truly love it!
So... here it is, the real estate industry is an exciting and rewarding field to pursue, that allows you to interact with clients and help people find their dream homes.
I think it is important, if you are thinking about real estate, you have excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in housing. Essential skills in my opinion are, time management, financial skills, computer literacy, can complete tasks, can manage data, and perhaps most important...you are authentic and really care about the people you are working with and for.
You will be developing professional relationships and interactions with people, and you must enjoy helping people. For most people their home will most likely be the larges purchase they will likely make and being an integral part of that journey is something that will be so rewarding.
Maybe if you are interested in this career path, you try to find and internship. Then if taking college classes to advance your career, consider a degree in marketing or business administration.
Here are the advantages to this career...again in my opinion: Earning opportunities: You get to decide how hard you want to work which will determine your income...you are in charge...not waiting for that cost of living raise.
Offers flexibility: You establish your own services and time line...you can work your schedule around real life.
Meeting new people: If you are people person you will love this part. You will meet and work with lots of people.
OK, Disadvantages as real estate agent: NO GUARANTEED SALARY..this is the biggest hurdle to get over and to adjust to. You don't get paid, if you don't sell.
Workflow can be constant. To maintain a strong presence in the market, you will work around the clock often.
Competition: You must be able to handle competition and the greed that come into play with competition, especially when there is money involved. It certainly is a career where money can get things more competitive.
If you ever think about a real estate career I invite you to make an appointment and come visit with me. I will be authentic and honest about my own career and how it has worked for me, and what I had to adjust to. I have no regrets and after 42 plus years of doing listing and selling homes, I still feel blessed and rewarded, perhaps now more than ever. I truly appreciate each and every person I work with and not know how lucky I am...I don't take people or the transaction for granted...I am truly blessed.
